Built using globally recognized datasets from NASA, Copernicus Marine Service, GEBCO, Natural Earth, and other leading scientific authorities, these Spilhaus projections transform complex oceanographic data into cohesive, visually compelling narratives of Earth’s interconnected systems.

The Spilhaus Projection shows how all of Earth’s seas and oceans connect as a single body of water. It was originally created by Athelstan Spilhaus, who joined WHOI in 1936 and developed the bathythermograph to measure ocean depths and temperatures.

The Creative Studio used this rarely-seen projection to display real data for global currents, sea surface temperature, phytoplankton blooms, sea ice concentration, and bathymetry. These data visualizations formed the base of a public education campaign, part of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Campaign for our Ocean Planet and were featured on the cover of Oceanus magazine. A watercolor version of the Spilhaus Projection is also available as a print and on select apparel.
